About Joy Gregory
Born in England to Jamaican parents, Gregory is a graduate of Manchester Polytechnic and the Royal College of Art. As an artist, she is preoccupied with the telling of marginalized stories and is drawn toward the exploration of issues such as colonization and gender, hierarchies including class, power, and the liminal spaces inhabited by the dispossessed. Her research interests span the history of science, medicine and botany, social sciences, politics, and linguistics. As a photographer, she makes full use of the media from video, digital, and analog photography to Victorian print processes. In 2002, Gregory received the NESTA Fellowship, which enabled her the freedom to research a major piece around language endangerment. She is the recipient of numerous awards and has exhibited in many international festivals and biennales. Her work is included in collections worldwide and was featured in "Art in Focus: Women From the Center," a student-curated exhibition on view at the Center in 2021 (https://britishart.yale.edu/exhibitions-programs/art-focus-women-center). She currently lives and works in London.
