About Helen Cammock
Born in Staffordshire in 1970, Cammock is a British artist who works across moving image, photography, writing, poetry, performance, printmaking, and installation. She received her BA at the University of Brighton in 2008 and her MA from the Royal College of Art, London, in 2011. She is interested in histories, authorship, storytelling, and the excavation of unheard and excluded voices, often mapping her own work and found texts onto social and political situations. She interrogates the ways stories are told, the hierarchy of histories, and who is rendered invisible and therefore unacknowledged. Her work makes leaps between places, times, and contexts, forcing viewers to acknowledge complex global relations and the inextricable connection between the individual and society. Projects rely heavily on research and a consideration of form is important—the space between image and text, and between ideas, form, and medium.
Cammock won the Turner Prize in 2019 for "The Long Note," a film and installation which examines the civil rights movement in Derry, with a focus on the role of women, making connections between Irish civil rights and Black civil rights. In 2018, she was awarded the Max Mara Art Prize for Women in collaboration with Whitechapel Gallery, London. Cammock’s first large-scale solo exhibition, "behind the eye is the promise of rain," is at Kestner Gesellschaft, Hannover, Germany, through May 2022. Other solo exhibitions include "I Decided I Want to Walk," Kate MacGarry Gallery, London (2020); "The Sound of Words," Reading Museum (2019); and "Shouting in Whispers," Cubitt, London (2017). Her work has been in group exhibitions at Somerset House, London; Firstsite, Colchester; Hollybush Gardens, London; and Kunsthaus Bregenz, Austria, to name a few. She has staged performances at The Showroom, Whitechapel Gallery, and the Institute of Contemporary Art, London, and the Maramotti Collection, a private collection of contemporary art in Italy. Cammock lives and works in Brighton and London.
