Astra Lost In Space was a trending anime we went into blind. It had massive potential, but ultimately had too many issuesand failed at everything it tried to accomplish. A good plot with excellent places for dark and deep cutting ideas to hit home was instead written as a "best of all possibilities" anime. The things Kanata and the others go through should be traumatic, yet their trip ends up being far more like a three month vacation than anything difficult. The show has so many opportunities to hit home really interesting and unique ideas, but prefers to keeps its feel good happy setting in lieu of some actual philosophical questioning.
