Automatically assign random Material IDs to selected geometry and spline objects in Autodesk 3ds Max with SiNi Random Material IDs.

In this tutorial, we demonstrate how to define the available number of Material IDs, generate random assignments and prepare assets for Multi/Sub-Object materials and renderer-driven variation.

Random Material IDs is particularly useful for:

• Preparing objects for Multi/Sub-Object materials
• Creating variation across floor tiles
• Randomising brick and masonry materials
• Varying timber and parquet textures
• Adding colour variation to repeated objects
• Preparing spline objects for material variation
• Creating renderer-driven randomisation
• Assigning IDs across large selections quickly

Set the Material ID Quantity to define the range of IDs available for assignment.

Enable Unique IDs When Quantity Allows to prevent duplicate IDs when the selected ID range contains enough values for all selected objects.

Apply Random Material IDs generates and assigns the IDs across the current selection. Display Selected Material IDs provides a viewport reference for reviewing the assigned values.

Once the IDs have been generated, assign a corresponding Multi/Sub-Object material to create controlled material or texture variation across the selected assets.
