Hiking the Maroon Bells in Aspen Colorado must be on your bucket list! The Maroon Bells are located near Aspen Colorado and they bring over 200,000 visits a summer. There is also no free camping near Aspen Colorado.
Free dispersed camping near Aspen Colorado is very limited, so we decided to boondock with our RV near Twin Lakes Colorado. Although Aspen Colorado is about 1 hour away from Twin Lakes Colorado we get to save money and enjoy the beautiful drive over Independence Pass. Be aware Independence Colorado has a newer but very strict length limit of 35 feet, so really it's only suitable for van lifers or very small motorhomes.
As we get to The Maroon Bells near Aspen Colorado we are bummed to see that they are not even checking for our National Park Passes or our permits that were required to hike the Maroon Bells trail. We decided to hike up to Crater Lake which is at the base of the Maroon Bells. After the hike, we explored downtown Aspen, which is not really our vibe. Downtown Aspen colorado is very nice but also has a very expensive culture. One the way home while driving Indepencece pass we stopped at the ice caves for another short hike.
