Step into the Ashurst Cabin, an original 1878 log home preserved at the Pioneer Living History Museum in Phoenix, Arizona. This modest dwelling was the boyhood home of Henry Fountain Ashurst, Arizona’s first U.S. Senator, renowned as the “Silver-tongued Orator of Congress.”
Originally located in a remote box canyon near Ashurst Lake, the cabin was home to the Ashurst family, who faced isolation and harsh frontier conditions. With the father often away trapping wild horses and ranching sheep, Mrs. Ashurst managed the household, cooking over a fireplace or outdoor campfire, making garments, and teaching her children to read and write.
In 1968, to save it from ruin, the cabin was carefully dismantled and transported piece by piece via a 200-foot steel cable tramway to its current location at the museum. The relocation was made possible by the Babbitt Land and Cattle Company and restoration funds from Modern Pioneers’ Life Insurance Co.
Today, the Ashurst Cabin stands as a poignant testament to the resilience of frontier families and the humble origins of a significant figure in Arizona’s history.
