Ashford-in-the-Water is one of those Peak District villages that feels gently timeless. At its heart, the River Wye slips quietly beneath the graceful medieval Sheepwash Bridge, its low arches perfectly reflected in the water on calm days. The bridge has linked the village for centuries and remains one of its most recognisable and photogenic features, especially when framed by stone cottages and riverside trees.
Just a short walk away stands All Saints’ Church, set slightly apart from the village centre in peaceful surroundings. Parts of the church date back to the 13th century, and its solid stone tower and simple, dignified interior speak of long continuity and quiet worship. Together, the bridge, the church, and the river give Ashford-in-the-Water a sense of harmony and calm that captures the essence of the White Peak.
