Ceramic artist Bisila Noha draws from Old World and women-centered clay traditions globally and has apprenticed in Italy, Armenia, and Spain and with traditional artists in Oaxaca and Morocco. Originally trained in wheel throwing, Noha began incorporating elements of hand building, coiling, and carving taught to her by women in her travels.
She pays homage to ceramic traditions of Cameroon, Nigeria, Chad, and the Ivory Coast by referencing forms popular in these regions. “Reunion IX. Following the light” is evocative of the work of renowned Baule potter Kouame Kakaha (born ca. 1960), who popularized the double-legged vessel in the 1970s, a shape that relates to femininity, fertility, and creation.
