This film offers an intimate and cinematic journey through one of Arthur Casas’ most personal projects: his private retreat in Iporanga, Guarujá, on the coast of São Paulo, Brazil, a house originally conceived as a place to disconnect, reflect, and reconnect with nature.
Awarded “O Melhor da Arquitetura” in 2008, the residence was designed in the early 2000s and remains one of the architect’s most emblematic works. Set within preserved Atlantic Forest and occupying less than one fifth of the plot, the house is organized into two symmetrical volumes arranged in an L-shape, opening toward the landscape and dissolving the boundaries between interior and exterior.
In this film, beyond the architectural walkthrough, we hear directly from Arthur Casas himself. Through his interview, he shares the intentions behind the project, his relationship with the Brazilian landscape, and the principles that guided the design, from the search for material permanence to the desire to create spaces that age naturally over time.
The house features approximately 485 m² of built area, with a mixed structural system combining masonry and metal. Continuous glass façades, an 11-meter-high ceiling, and fully integrated living spaces reinforce the sense of openness and fluidity. Materials such as exposed concrete and certified Cumaru wood define both interior and exterior finishes, creating warmth while maintaining durability in the tropical climate.
Large sliding glass panels and operable aluminum louvers regulate light and ventilation, while generous terraces and a raised deck frame views of untouched forest. The landscape design by Gil Fialho complements the native vegetation with a lush tropical garden, and a carefully designed lighting scheme enhances the architecture at dusk without overpowering the natural surroundings.
More than a documentation of a house, this film is conceived as a poetic and cinematic experience, a slow exploration of light, proportion, textures, and atmosphere, interwoven with the architect’s own reflections on living, working, and finding refuge in nature.
