At the U.S. Department of Energy’s Argonne National Laboratory, a research organization dedicated to advancing basic and applied science for U.S. prosperity and security, scientists are exploring the strange and powerful rules of quantum physics to spark the next wave of technologies in computing, communication and sensing. Argonne leverages multidisciplinary teams, world-class facilities, and powerful scientific tools to advance quantum information science and confront profound scientific and technological challenges.

In our Quantum Concepts series, we bring these ideas to life by imagining how a familiar object — the apple that inspired Isaac Newton — might act in the quantum world.

This episode looks at the concept of quantization. The quantum world isn’t continuous but is rather built on discrete “steps.” A quantum object, such as an atom, can exist only on those steps. That’s quantization, and it’s the feature that makes the quantum world quantum.
