Can’t get past the first step of touching your dog’s feet? Try this!
I saw a video where a woman was frustrated with not being able to use positive reinforcement to condition her dog to like his feet being touched so she gave up. She kept touching the dog’s foot and the dog would withdraw their foot every time so she couldn’t figure out how to progress to the next step.
Here are some unconventional game changers:
1- Use movement away from the dog first
2- Have the dog move toward you and present their paw
3- Feed AS you touch the paw at first to make it easier even though its technically “wrong” for conditioning, before you progress to touching first before marking and feeding
4- Add duration, feeding while the foot is in your hand - and then continue to mark and feed for duration not just a 1 touch one treat scenario
