Captions are important for accessibility. The problem is how do you do captions to make them accessible for everyone?

Are my captions working for you?

Because I get comments regularly telling me I’m doing captions “wrong.”

Accessibility is a nuanced subject. Captions that are accessible to some are inaccessible to others. I have chosen to prioritize a certain group of needs.

So who is responsible for accessible content?

I take what responsibility I can while also prioritizing my own accessibility. I also have a responsibility to listen to my audience and perhaps do things differently than what is considered "best practice."

That is how I have arrived at my current, and ever-evolving approach to content.

A really great person to follow on accessibility, especially with captions is Meryl Evans, CPACC
Her content and our conversations have been invaluable.
