Renowned for its high quality architectural metalwork throughout the United Kingdom, NES Architecture created 120 ten-foot high aluminum panels mounted on the walls of a new electrical substation constructed for a major international athletic event. NES Architecture set out to design the finely polished aluminum panel surfaces with a vibrant feeling of flowing motion.
The challenge for NES Architecture was to punch the aluminum sheets with rows of punched holes in irregular wave lines across the entire panel surface. Punched in 6 different sizes, the holes were unconventional in that they had a "dimple" around the perimeter to produce different visual effects in varying light conditions.
NES achieved the results using its CNC turret punch press equipped with Mate thin turret forming tooling, Each panel has 1,100 holes utilizing 6 hole sizes randomly positioned but following the design artist's vector line on the panel surfaces. The thousands of holes display a novel visual effect of motion and waves creating a spectacular building facade.
