Knockouts are most frequently used in electrical enclosures as an access point to bring wires into the enclosure. An important feature of the knockout are the tabs that keep it attached to the sheet. The tab size, quantity and location are critical to determining the ease or difficulty with which the knockout is removed,

This animation shows how a knockout is made using a Mate forming tool. The knockout forming process uses a single tool to create the slug and the tabs. It is common for the slug to be slightly displaced more than one material thickness to ensure it has been cut free of the sheet. Precise, consistent stroke control in the press is very important for producing consistent, high quality knockouts.
