We’ve shared some of the cool artifacts from the excavation at Alta, but how were they found? Learn the process of screening in this video!

Excavations recently took place at Alta, a silver mining boomtown on what is now the Forest Service managed land, throughout August. Volunteers from the Utah Cultural Site Stewardship Program and SHPO staff were on-site to help with the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest and Alta Ski Resort project, and their consultant SWCA. Artifacts found include many animal bones like the one shown in the video, which can help provide information about what people were eating and how they were preparing food in the 19th century, as well as ceramics, glass, metal, and many other unique artifacts
