Did you know that Liberty Park was once owned by Brigham Young? The property was first owned by Isaac Chase who built the Chase Mill between 1847 and 1852. This was the first mill and the first commercial structure built in the Salt Lake valley. Brigham Young later partnered with Chase in the business, and in 1860 Young took over the operation. The mill and the surrounding farm stayed in Young’s possession until it was sold to the city for the enjoyment of city residents in 1880.
145 years later, the Utah Cultural Site Stewardship Program was out enjoying the park just as Young intended! We led a small group on a history-focused tour of the park which included a stop at the historic Chase Mill — now an events center within the Tracy Aviary. We’re glad to work with the Salt Lake City Park Rangers to help safeguard the cultural resources in our beloved green spaces.
