On April 14, 1958, the BBC introduced VERA—the Vision Electronic Recording Apparatus—its first practical video recording system! Before this, TV broadcasts were either live or captured on expensive film reels, and there was no easy way to replay them. VERA changed everything.
Developed by Dr. Peter Axon, VERA used half-inch magnetic tape running at a blazing 200 inches per second. It could record up to 15 minutes of footage, allowing broadcasters to replay shows for the first time. Though it was soon replaced by more advanced video recorders, VERA laid the groundwork for the evolution of video playback—from VHS to digital streaming.
