All-in-one washer/dryers (the type where washing and drying happens all in the same drum) are fantastic if you have a need for them, but a separate washer and dryer will always be the more effective option. Regardless, get whichever option suits YOUR needs!
As for hard water, any appliance will struggle with hard water if you're not keeping up with maintenance. In addition to making sure you're using appliance cleaners regularly (I recommend Lemi Shine for hard water because it's what people have told me works the best), it's important to make sure you're keeping up with scheduled maintenance as well. Replace dishwasher and washing machine water fill hoses once every 5 years (and check the water valve screens on the machine for sediment when the hoses are disconnected), use rinse aid in your dishwasher to prevent hard water spots on glassware, and clean hard water stains from refrigerator dispensers using a rag and white vinegar (wipe clean with plain water after).
