Today Apple has introduced the M5 Pro & Max Chips, thrown them into updated MacBook Pros and the MacBook Air M5, plus updated the M5 MacBook Pro base model AND a new Studio Display and Studio Display XDR- but there’s a catch.
“M5 Pro and M5 Max are a monumental leap forward for Apple silicon, leveraging our new Fusion Architecture to scale the capabilities of Apple silicon while preserving its core tenets of performance, power efficiency, and unified memory architecture,” said Johny Srouji, Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Technologies. “Both chips underscore our relentless pace of innovation, integrating the world’s fastest CPU cores, a next-generation GPU with Neural Accelerators, a faster Neural Engine, and high-bandwidth, high-capacity memory — resulting in an unparalleled combination of performance, efficiency, and incredible on-device AI capabilities for MacBook Pro.”
M5 Pro and Max now have a Fusion Architecture with two dies on a single SOC
Up to 18 core CPU with 6 Super cores, World’s Fastest CPU core, and 12 all new performance cores
M5 Pro
Up to 20 core GPU with Neural accelerators, 4 more CPU cores than the M4 Pro and unto 64GB of Unified memory at 307GB/s
M5 Pro is 3.7x faster than M4 Pro at Ai image generation,
3.9x faster for On device LLM prompt processing
1.6X faster gaming performance with ray tracing in Cyberpunk
M5 Max
18 Core CPU with Up to 40 core GPU
Up to 128GB Unified Memory at 614GB/s bandwidth
4x faster than last generation on LLM Prompts
3X faster than the last generation in Davinci Resolve Studio render effects than M4 Max
M5 base and M5 Pro MacBook Pros now both start with 1TB of storage, M5 Max gets 2 TB as standard
And the new displays - Both are 5K and 27”, so pressumably the 32” 6k Pro XDR is gone.
For the main Studio Display it seems like we get a better centerstage camera, and thunderbolt 5. Otherwise, it seems to be what we had before, coming with a tilt only stand
The Studio Display XDR however is 120Hz Pro-Motion, with MiniLED display, over 2000 local dimming zones and 1000 nits in SDR or 2000 nits brightness in HDR, with a wider colour gamut. This one also gets a height adjustable stand to be more fancy. And just in case you’re into medical imaging, it includes a new DICOM imaging preset for radiology work. Which is nice, but I’m not sure I personally need it.
MacBook Air M5 gets double starting storage, now at 512GB - for 1099 up 100
MacBook Pro M5 Pro starts at 2199, up 200? - for some reason I can’t find the press release for this and the M4 Max to check pricing
M5 MacBook Pro is up 100 to 1699
Studio Display is 1599, the same as before I believe, while the XDR model starts at 3299 - which seems a bit steep to me.
