Making a radio for after the big event out of common materials that would be left in the rubble. Real hard rock radio!

MATERIALS
- Wire (coil and antenna)
- Core (plastic pipe)
- Earphone (smoke detector sounder, pipe, wire)
- Galena or iron pyrite or graphite detector (no diodes, they are all burned out)
- Pin

Let's see if we could build an Apocalypse Radio from scrap in a true emergency? Let's try constructing a bare-bones crystal radio using only scavenged materials. We use iron pyrite (fool’s gold) or galena, salvaged wire, a piezoelectric element turned into an improvised earphone, and a safety pin. This survival experiment walks through how a minimal AM receiver can still get broadcast signals using nothing more than passive components, a hand-wound coil, and a bit of ingenuity. Along the way, we explore the realities of crystal detector sensitivity, the challenge of finding the “sweet spot,” and how signal competition affects reception in a single-diode setup. Whether you're into prepping, off-grid communication, vintage radio tech, or hands-on electronics experiments, this project demonstrates just how little you truly need to receive information when it matters most. A blend of science, improvisation, and real-world engineering constraints—this is crystal radio stripped down to its absolute essentials.
