The town of Antonito is a community with ties to early Hispano settlers. Founded in 1880, Antonito is sister to other towns in Conejos County that New Mexican families settled in the region under the 1842 Conejos Land Grant.
These images are from the Antonito Community History Collection, which brings together stories and memories of Antonito and the surrounding villages. The song that is playing in the background is titled Valse De La Grandma with violin by Lorenzo Trujillo and guitar by E.J. Rodriguez.
The Antonito Community History Collection explores the history of the community from the late 1800s to the present from the perspective of community storytellers who shared accounts, documents, and photos. Community members Angela Montoya and Lisa Marie Sandoval co-curated this collection as part of a 3-year grant-funded collaboration (2021-2024) with Antonito Together prioritizing the interest of communities in interpreting, preserving, and making accessible their local histories on their own terms. Funding was provided in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (award #PB-274243-20) with Maria Islas-Lopez, Ph.D. as Project Director.
