The Manovill Conversations

A Performance + Conversation

Join us for a unique, original performance featuring thirty high school students from the Ruth Asawa San Francisco School of the Arts who, together with three artists, have spent the past six weeks learning about fascism, antisemitism and white supremacy through theater, music, dance and writing. This 45-minute performance, which is a call-and-response between past and present, aims to give voice to the struggles that young people face right now. “Anti-Anti” is directed by Dan Wolf.
The project connects young people to history through art and education workshops on-location, where history happened. It works with artists, educators and students on issues of remembrance and social justice, using creative expression to help repair what is broken in our world.
Dan Wolf's (Director) work crosses artistic and cultural borders to combine conventional theater styles with the themes, language, music, history, and aesthetics of the hip-hop generation. He is currently developing Curren$y, an all-female rap adaptation of Shakespeare’s Merchant of Venice as well as End of the Silence, a podcast play about the untimely death of an artist from Hamburg.
Gendell Hernandez (Artist Educator/Co-Director) was born in Havana, Cuba. He has been an actor, director and teaching artist in the Bay Area since 1997. As an actor and director, he has collaborated with Word for Word, Camposanto, Theaterworks, Berkeley Rep, San Jose Rep, Center Rep, New Pickle Circus, Teatro Vision, Felonious, Teatro del Juglar, Oakland Public Theater and the Pacific Alliance Stage Company. Productions include Around The World In 80 Days, The Cook, Blood Wedding, Oil!, Food Stories, Beatbox: A Raparretta, House on Mango Street, References to Salvador Dali Make Me Hot and Demetrius Unbound. He is currently an Associate Artist of Word for Word and a member of the Alphabet Rockers, and he teaches theater in the United States, Cuba and France.
Jessica Wolf (Artist Educator/Choreographer) has been working with bodies in diverse communities since 1997. Jessica began her performance career with Culture Shock SF/Oakland and continued dancing off Broadway at the New York Hip-Hop Theater Festival and in Europe with one of the first hip-hop theater performances.
