Witness the odd behavior of a Smart-UPS 750 after a partial battery failure. Usually APC's 3rd generation Smart-UPS units refuse to do anything with bad batteries in place, but these were apparently on the fine line between a working UPS and one that plays dead.
It's nothing new batteries won't fix. And despite my low opinion of UPG batteries, I got six years out of these in varying usage scenarios.
