This is an update to my video two weeks ago about Crohn's & Liver Disease. I got my pathology reports back and can happily report that the mass that they found on my liver is benign! It was the welcome news we needed in 2020 after a rough year.
Liver disease in Crohn's patients is quite common. In a recent study by Cleveland Clinic, it was discovered that patients with Crohn's disease are 3 times more likely to get liver disease.
The most common is non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), or non-alcoholic steatohepititis. NAFLD can be corrected through diet and exercise however NASH is a little more serious and is the leading cause of cirrhosis of the liver.
My GI doctor sent me to the specialist when my blood labs that were pulled at every Remicade appointment showed that my liver was in trouble. He sent me to the specialist that reviewed my MRIs from this year and ordered a fibroscan. The fibroscan is an ultrasound of the liver.
The fibroscan confirmed I have some scarring on my liver and also that there is a mass on the liver. Nothing could be determined from that one test, so he ordered more blood work, a new MRI and CT scan and a biopsy of my liver. This will allowed him to properly diagnose my liver disease as cirrhosis of the liver and that the mass was NOT malignant!
This video is intended to warn my Crohnies out there to ask your GI doctor about liver disease. Have a conversation about whether they are comfortable have blood work drawn when you go in for infusions or possibly at checkups with his office. Also, look on your MRI results for notes about your liver. My liver problems could be charted as getting steadily worse from my MRIs over the course of this year.

Since January I had two EUAs (Exam Under Anesthesia) that resulted in one partial fistulotomy and two setons (drains) being placed. Two colonoscopies and two MRIs. I began Remicade infusions in mid-March, I incorrectly state in the video my start date for Remicade, apologies it's been a year. I'm also currently on Azathioprine an oral immune suppressant (chemo).
