This talk explores how Eastern contemplative frameworks, particularly in Tantric, yogic and Buddhist praxis, can support the integration of psychedelic experiences. We will compare expanded states from both practices. To frame this discussion, we will outline and acknowledge the views that warn against projecting metaphysical frameworks on psychedelic experience in psychedelic integration therapy and Eastern traditions. Within this framework, we will explore how more than 2000 years of development of practical support of the expanded states from Eastern traditions can support healthy integration of the psychedelic experience. We will explore how Eastern systems safeguard against the adverse effects of ego dissolution and consider the cultural transference of such systems from ancient India to modernity with respect to systems of knowledge and India’s colonial history.

Ann studies ontological frameworks within the traditions of Yoga, Tantra and Buddhism to better understand how expanded states affect our mundane psychology. Ann explores the parallels between spontaneous kundalini experiences, expanded states achieved through meditative practice and psychedelic experiences. By drawing on thousands of years of collective experience from Eastern traditions, Ann works towards bridging ancient frameworks with modern Western psychology to safely support others towards integrating the transperson with the personal.
