This presentation addresses the relationship between psychedelic and other exceptional experiences for improved wellbeing. We’ll consider similarities and differences between psychedelic and exceptional experiences, including effective integration strategies. Participants will hear results from research exploring what helps or hinders experiencers as they try to process their psychedelic and exceptional experiences, with specific case studies related to lucid dreaming and near-death experiences. We will also consider open questions and make suggestions for future research.

Bio:

Joelle Adams is a PhD candidate in Applied Transpersonal Psychology. Her research focuses on the integration and transmutation of psychedelic and other exceptional experiences. She also teaches Critical Thinking and Composition at Santa Monica College, creates programming for MAPS Canada’s School of Psychedelics, and offers support to those undergoing spiritual emergence.

$Jorel McQueen - Sacred Medicine through a Māori Lens This talk introduces a Māori‑led exploration of how traditional healing and ceremony can shape safe, culturally grounded psychedelic therapy in Aotearoa, New Zealand. We’ll examine how colonisation and deliberate legislation outlawed indigenous healers and fractured our rongoā (natural medicine) practices. Let’s take an immersive journey into Te Āo Māori (the Māori World) and discuss how our relationship with the natural world, esoteric knowledge systems and ancient pūrākau (storytelling) are informing models of care. I’ll be drawing on some insights from our recent national gathering, emerging Māori‑led initiatives and we’ll highlight the importance of indigenous sovereignty with healing and a path to genuine Māori–non‑Māori partnership in the psychedelic space. Bio: Jor’el McQueen is a Māori practitioner from Aotearoa New Zealand. dedicated to reviving indigenous healing rituals, rites of passage, and holistic well-being. He weaves Mātauranga Māori (knowledge), pūrākau(storytelling), and universal laws to guide transformation, blending ancestral wisdom with mindfulness, esoteric knowledge and modern approaches. Jor’el shares indigenous perspectives on psychedelics, consciousness, and ceremony as tools for deep healing.
