My piece, Wanders, explores the possibilities of transformation over time, using an intuitively worked sequence of tones. This row, given in full in the opening bars of the pieces, constitutes the foundation of the piece as a whole: all material is somehow derivative from it. Expressivity was a central concern when writing the piece – I wanted each gesture to be quite rhetorical, allowing the instrument to become an extension of the player. Wanders is a mosaic of these gestures and phrases, trailing off towards the end into the breath that lay behind each sentence. The title stems from this structure: a kind of wandering into the distance, sometimes in a straight line, sometimes in circles.
