Tapping may have come to prominence in the dazzling solos of the 1980s, but these days the technique’s employed in all sorts of situations, on both acoustic and electric guitars.
There’s no denying the fact that it’s an advanced technique but tapping is so versatile that it’s really worth persevering with. Aside from EVH and Satriani-style solos, you can use the technique to extend chords or provide a percussive, rhythmic backbone to an acoustic tune.
In this video lesson Elixir Strings artist Ando San demonstrates a tasty chordal tapping section from his song “For Time Being I’ll Be Alright”. In it, you’ll learn what he refers to as “pedal tapping”, where you hammer-on on a (more or less) fixed position with your picking hand. You’ll hear it adds a real melodic edge that’s impossible to achieve any other way – so check it out and get practicing!
