Part 1 of a look at how the old tricks of creating a false mystery have not changed. Graham Hancock and co are simply rehashing the old method from a 1970's TV series called "In Search Of" hosted by Leonard Nimoy.
William Shatner is currently hosting one which follows in the exactly the same vein of this.
To key to creating an ancient mystery involves
1-Creating a single point of doubt by asserting it exists.
2- Creating an emotional connection to the characters involved, or by claiming the powers that be are in a cover up. Basically someone to love or someone to hate.
3- Cherry picking facts or outright fabricating facts to give a veneer of science.
4- Juxtaposing 'scientific' these facts with a unfounded explanation which now seems reasonable since the 'experts and engineers" can't explain it,
5- Using evocative language, imagery and music to manipulate and/or distract the viewer from glaring inconsistencies.
6- End the narrative on a note of emotional mystery with a glint of hope for the future. "Sadly he dies and took his secrets with him but perhaps in the near future these unexplained mysteries will be solved."
Literally these are the exact tactics that snake oil merchants, con artists and cult leaders used and are still using.
You can debunk these types of grifters on individual points but a new head emerges every time one is lopped off. Then given enough time they simply return to the old story again knowing full well the "mystery" was explained. They really don't care about truth.
The only real way to protect yourself from this con is to understand the methodology.
There'll always be a new anti-aging cream or anti-gravity product, though as long as you can spot the classic marketing ploys you'll be able to able to see the bastards coming.
Prevention is better than a cure.
