Taking a break from the brutal heat in South Africa when volunteering at Cheetah Experience, was starving and snacked on some left over party ginger snaps. Zen, the Anatolian Shepherd decided to beg for whatever I was eating and was VERY disappointed with the outcome.
Zen is primarily on the B.A.R.F diet or Bones And Raw Food or meat. He gets some of the left over donations of meat that are for the Big Cats there; lions leopards, cheetahs, servals, caracals, and tiger. Usually it's in the form of a fresh bone with meat on it.
I've not seen him eat dog food, but maybe they have that for him as well. Natural foods are way better than the processed ones; less chemicals, dyes, hormones, artificial flavors and preservatives.
Anyway, Zen is at CE because he is part of the program to SAVE Big Cats like Cheetahs. He was paired once with another female Anatolian but she did not work out due to some aggression issues. He was going to have pups that would be trained and given to local farmers, herdsman, and ranchers to protect their flocks from South African predatory animals like the lessor cats (servals, caracals, Cheetahs and maybe leopards). Anatolians are natural herding dogs and will protect their family, which easily could include a flock of sheep, cattle, or anything.
Since Zen is so used to a natural raw diet of meat, I found it interesting that he did not like sugar ginger snaps. He spits them out. Good for him. I wish I was like him in that respect. Sugar is a terrible addiction for me for which I struggle everyday. Zen is now my inspiration to quit. Just Spit It Out! That will be my motto when tempted.
