After another reunion with my buddy Gabriel the Cheetah at Cheetah Experience South Africa, I decided to reward him with how he prefers to greet me... laying planked out on my back on the ground. He always liked it when I was at my most vulnerable to groom and greet me, or hold me close with one of his hugs. I spent three weeks reacquainting and bonding with him before letting him do this to be sure I could trust him.
I've discovered cheetahs recognize submissive postures similar to dogs/wolves. To lay down and de-escalate any situation whether defensive, aggressive or friendly in nature, instantly calms the situation. I've even gotten cheetahs that fear and hate me to come over and lay down next to me when I'm just lying on my back. I've noticed even in fights with themselves, they will drop to their sides or back to defend and lesson tensions. So I tried it and it works similar to submissive posturing with dogs. And friendly cheetahs will come over and either lay on you or beside you; groom and purr; especially at night. Gabriel absolutely loves it when I lay on my back and let him greet me. Gabriel is a purchased cheetah at this breeding center. His genetic mix is diverse enough to become a stud animal if and when he is ready. In the mean time, I made a concerted effort to become his friend and me his. I've known Gabriel since he was young cub. He was hand raised and tamed at a young age.
Having a captive tamed wild animal aids in the overall care and welfare of the animal. I've mentioned before the benefits of having an animal which is loved and respected. It makes for a better relationship both ways and improves the state of mind of the animal. If you must interact with such an animal, being it's friend is far less risky than not. Simple medical examination and care can be performed, no longer requiring dangerous sedation. Simple transport can be done, medication administered, examining skin, paws, claws, teeth and with positive reinforcement using clicker training, you can even withdrawal blood or give injections without complaint. I can pick ticks off of Gabriel. Try doing that with a non interactive wild cheetah or animal.
Anyway, enjoy the next 10 minutes of me blubbering over my favorite cheetah in the world! He is only 1 of 10,000 left on this planet. Consider supporting such breeding and conservation centers that help this wonderful endangered species. They are disappearing in the wild and in 50 years time, captive ones may be the only place you see them, along with other endangered cats in our world.
