Fallujah. Paul Benfield is a company commander pulling rear security out of the escape hatch of an MRAP, because the trucks are full of colonels and there are not enough shooters.
Two young men are standing on a corner. One is down on a knee. As the truck draws even with them, the man on his knee stands up with an RPG on his shoulder and fires at Paul from close range.
Paul had a choice. Drop down inside a heavily armored vehicle and be safe, or shoot back. He could not do both.
What he remembers is not fear. It is a single thought, arriving with total clarity: this is going to be so loud.
