The Great Seal Radio Bug - The Soviet Listening Device Hidden In Plain Sight

The fire station in Kensington in London, was evacuated early that morning due to a mystery radiation leak.

The leak was identified during a routine equipment check at the station, where a dosimeter detected a radiation pulse.

The stations firemen and local police officers suspected that the source might be the nearby Israeli Embassy. It seems like a rash decision to come to but the embassy had an X-ray machine for postal checks.
Many of London’s embassies used shortwave transmitters and

receivers to send information to other embassies and diplomatic sites both at home and around the world. Some still do today such as the Bulgarian embassy which I photographed a year or so back.

They also eavesdrop too so their host country’s intelligence services are usually suspicious of their activities.

The area surrounding the fire station was and still is home to many other foreign embassies. In those days, it was encircled by the Soviet Embassy, and the embassies of Czechoslovakia, Norway, Romania, and Holland as well.

By the following day both British and foreign counterintelligence agencies were scouring embassy land for further leaks, suspicious that it may be related to surveillance and eavesdropping.

After delicate diplomatic discussions, scientific advisors from the GLC entered the embassy and concluded that the 10 second bursts were emanating from the consular section.

By the next day, Thursday 30th August, 6 days after the first radiation leak was discovered, 16 firefighters had been sent to hospital for checks. All were ok luckily. Meanwhile, GLC investigators entered the embassy once more to conduct more checks and finally got to the bottom of things.

Police, firemen and investigators were allowed access to some of the Israel embassy’s rooms to search thoroughly and found that the radiation leak wasn’t really a radiation leak at all.
