The introduction episodes of these two series make very different promises. Despite both telling epic stories of Westerosi royalty, there was a clear difference in priorities. Where Game of Thrones spent considerable effort clearly demarcating territory where we could expect long term transformative character growth, House of the Dragon went all in on its setting up characters for political intrigue plots, a shorter term focus. Game of Thrones also set a clear thematic tone that communicates the kind of depth we can expect and where it comes from: the interplay between honor, cruelty, and weakness. House of the Dragon did not focus on making this clear. This is obviously too little data to conclude what this new show will actually be, but it's interesting on a writing level to compare priorities for a first episode.
