Once Boromir dies, Merry and Pippin are captured, and Sam and Frodo leave, the fellowship is over. But Aragorn disagrees and implies a bizarre expansion of the term that kinda feels like a cope. Is there any rationale to his wishful thinking here? And why was the fellowship built up so much, both by Elrond but also by Tolkien, if it was going to immediately flop like this? Why name the fiest book after something that failed 100 pages after it began? Unless there really is a deeper meaning and role "fellowship" plays in this epic battle for humanity. If we pay attention to Galadriel's history lesson at the beginning of the movie, it becomes clear why the fellowship wasn't just bound for failure, but failure was the best thing that could have happened to it, for the sake of all Middle Earth.
