Amy is a song written and performed in tribute by Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day, to the late Amy Winehouse, a singer that died at a young age due to alcohol poisoning. The song has a bittersweet, melancholy yet beautiful melody, expressing a feeling of sadness, a feeling of loss, a feeling of nostalgia, and a feeling of admiration. The lyrics are a true masterpiece crafted by a genius songwriter and lyricist. So full of emotion, every word perfectly placed, the flow of the lyrics perfectly in sync with the melody, the result of which creates one of the best Green Day songs.
Billie Joe Armstrong has never met Amy, but has admired her work from afar, and wishes that he could’ve been her friend. He feels that her death was not only a tragedy in and of itself, but her music was iconic in that genre of music, a connection that has now been stripped away.
Amy’s drinking addiction is also referenced in the song, “27 gone without a trace and you walked away from your drink.” This is interesting as the songwriter also suffered from substance abuse, and most definitely identifies with her in this regard.
