Here the conductor on Amtrak's eastbound California Zephyr Train 6 explains how crew scheduling works while crossing the I Street drawbridge just west of the Sacramento passenger station.

While the operating crew on Amtrak trains work fairly typical 8~ hour schedules due to Federal regulations, the on board service crew is on board for the whole trip. For the California Zephyr service staff make a 6 day round trip between Chicago and San Francisco and back again with a single night off in a hotel in Emeryville, CA between the westbound and eastbound legs.
