Amber Lawrence's eighth studio album Suburban Cowgirl is more than a collection of songs, it's a deeply personal reflection on a remarkable 21 year journey from suburban Sydney to becoming one of Australia's most respected country music artists. Speaking with Australian Musician editor Greg Phillips, the six-time Golden Guitar winner revealed how the album captures both the reality of her current life and the determination that has fuelled her career since she first discovered country music through a LeAnn Rimes album and later embraced artists such as Kasey Chambers, Beccy Cole and Melinda Schneider.
Lawrence explained that while she never originally planned on becoming a singer, country music's storytelling quickly resonated with her. More than two decades later, Suburban Cowgirl serves as both a celebration of that journey and a snapshot of life today, a working musician balancing family, touring and creativity. The album follows a particularly emotional previous record, written during a difficult period marked by personal loss. By contrast, she describes Suburban Cowgirl as her most joyful album yet.
