Amazo is one of the most fascinating characters in Justice League Unlimited. In this video essay, I explore the complete story of Amazo in the DC Animated Universe, and how Amazo evolved from a simple android into one of the most philosophical characters in superhero animation.
The DCAU version of Amazo was radically reimagined by the Justice League creative team. Instead of a straightforward Justice League villain, Amazo became a blank slate searching for identity, purpose, and meaning in a universe that couldn’t give him easy answers. This left him open to abuse at the hands of Lex Luthor, who manipulated him.
