We are on a street food tour in Binondo, Manila! We have been dying to get our hands on more Filipino food, and on this food tour we got to try 16 different Filipino foods including dinuguan, lumpia, hopia, siapoa, taho, dumplings, and so much more!! We took this tour with Ivan from the tour company 'Old Manila Walks' and had an awesome time learning about the food we were eating as well as some of Manila's relevant history. Binondo is Manila's Chinatown which happens to be the oldest Chinatown in the world! The cuisine is a unique blend of traditional Chinese food mixed with common Filipino ingredients and cooking processes. The result is a food scene you cannot find anywhere else in the world!
In our opinion, Binondo has some of the best street food in Manila, and if you are a tourist in Manila you should definitely visit Chinatown to learn more about the cuisine as well as the history of how the first ever Chinatown came into existence. It's an interesting story, but we will let Ivan tell you on your tour :)
As you'll see from my reactions in the video, not every new Filipino street food was a hit! Mico will eat just about anything, but I (Nicole) have a few limits as far as trying foods goes. In the case of this Manila street food tour, I pushed myself to try everything, even when I knew it probably wasn't going to be something I'd be reaching for twice. I hope that wins me some brownie points with my Filipino family.
If you are a foreigner trying Filipino street food, we highly recommend you give everything a try, especially if it's something you've never seen before! Going with a guide is a great idea if you are nervous about where to eat from that won't make you sick. We love going on guided food tours when we first arrive in a country so we can better enjoy the food during our entire time in a country. We find that we learn a lot about the general cuisine of a country this way and then we can really dig into the food on our own during our visit! We loved trying Filipino food this way, because even though Mico has grown up with Filipino food, we still learned so much about the variety and history of Filipino food on our tour!
