The 2024 BMW 5 Series sport sedan returns with a fresh look, larger size, more powerful engines, and a full complement of in-car and driver safety tech. The new generation of the brand's just-right "Goldilocks" sedan falls between the full-size BMW 7 Series luxury shuttle and the compact 3 Series.
New four- and six-cylinder engines yield more power and likely better fuel economy. We won't know until the Environmental Protection Agency releases its estimates, but we'd expect the base 5 Series to return around 30 mpg in combined city and highway driving, and 35-36 mpg on the highway — nice numbers for a 255-horsepower midsize sedan. For now, the 5 Series is only available in base 530i form; the six-cylinder-powered 540i arrives later this year. BMW hasn't announced an M-Series or plug-in hybrid version yet, but we'd expect to see replacements for those outgoing options next year. A new fully electric BMW i5 is also available and reviewed separately.

The BMW 5 Series has been redesigned for 2024, and in addition to new looks and a roomier cabin, it now includes an all-electric i5 model.
There are other midsize luxury and performance electric sedans available, but like the $106,395 Audi e-tron GT, they are far more expensive than the i5. Tesla’s Model 3 has long been the standard-bearer in the upscale midsize electric sedan class, but while the past year's series of price cuts make it much less expensive than the i5, the Model 3 has a positively Spartan interior and can’t match the BMW’s high level of fit and finish.
The most likely competitors are the Mercedes-Benz EQE Sedan, which starts almost $8,000 above the BMW's base price, and the Genesis Electrified G80, which ups the ante an additional $4,000. (The Genesis is available only with a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive powertrain and is actually priced a few thousand lower than the dual-motor, all-wheel-drive versions of both the i5 and the EQE). As a bonus, the i5 is competitive in range, getting up to 295 miles per charge (BMW’s estimate).
2024 Ford Mustang.
The Ford Mustang is instantly recognizable and needs no explanation. Now in its seventh generation, it remains true to the formula that has made it such a hit for the past 60 years: stylish, sporty, and affordable. Available in three key variations, the 2024 Ford Mustang might need no explanation, but its continued existence in a market dominated by crossover utilities probably does. And the simple answer is that Ford believes thousands of buyers still want what Mustang is selling: good looks and fun-to-drive performance in a vehicle that doesn't require mortgaging the homestead. With the return of four-cylinder EcoBoost and V8-powered GT models, plus a new 500-horsepower Dark Horse V8 variant, 2024 Mustang pricing ranges from near $32,500 to just under $60,000.
2024 Honda Accord.
Positives.
Exterior is still fresh after last year's redesign. Spacious backseat and trunk. Hybrid models are quick and extremely fuel-efficient.
Considerations.
No all-wheel-drive option. Not as much rear headroom as in some rivals. Key competitors offer more power.
2023 Hyundai IONIQ 6.
Hyundai's decision to make the second of its Ioniq EV models a sedan brings a welcome bit of variety to an SUV-dominated market. Its arching, aerodynamic shape helps deliver up to 361 miles of driving range, but will give design pundits plenty to argue about. We find it attractive and better looking in person than in photos.
The Ioniq 6 is a well-equipped five-passenger sedan. Officially a midsize, it boasts the interior space of a large sedan thanks to an EV-specific platform, shared with the Ioniq 5, that allows for a stretched wheelbase and more cabin area.
There aren't many sedans left in the market, and fewer still in the EV segment, so the Ioniq 6 pretty much stands alone. Its closest competitors likely will be the Tesla Model 3 sedan, at which it is specifically aimed, as well as the Ford Mustang Mach-E crossover, Polestar 2 hatchback sedan, and BMW i4 sedan.
2024 Maserati GranTurismo.
Positives.
Up to 550 horsepower. Classic style and presence. Smooth ride and responsive handling.
Considerations.
Few driver aids come standard. Many competitors are more affordable and provide stronger performance.
The Maserati GranTurismo is the quintessential Italian sports car, as enjoyable to look at as it is to drive. Some rivals offer more performance for the price, but few can match the GranTurismo's "bella vita" allure.
