How do you upgrade a 4kW AMADA CO2 laser cutting machine to a 12kW fiber laser system without replacing the entire machine?

In this engineering interview, our field service team shares the complete story of an AMADA CO2-to-fiber laser retrofit completed in the United States. The project included removing the original CO2 components, installing a new fiber laser source and cutting head, routing the fiber delivery cable, integrating the chiller, and connecting all alarm signals to the original AMADA control system.

The full project took approximately nine days:

- 5 days for removal and installation
- 3 days for system integration, signal processing and cutting tests
- 1 day for operator training

The original AMADA operating workflow was retained, allowing the customer’s operators to continue using a familiar interface. After the retrofit, the machine delivered higher cutting speed, improved motion performance and expanded cutting capability.

The engineering team tested stainless steel and carbon steel across multiple thicknesses, including a 32 mm carbon steel test with the new 12kW fiber laser system. The customer’s main production range was approximately 8–16 mm carbon steel.

This interview is useful for manufacturers evaluating whether to replace an older CO2 laser machine or extend its service life through a fiber laser retrofit.
