Since 1932, Wilensky’s Light Lunch on Fairmount has served the same sandwich the exact same way. It’s called the Wilensky Special: grilled all-beef salami and bologna, pressed flat and topped with mustard.
But it’s not just the food that has stayed the same at this Montreal institution. For nearly a century, this family-owned restaurant has barely changed a bit.
There are still only nine stools, zero tables, an old-fashioned soda fountain, a strict no-tipping policy and two firm rules about how the iconic sandwich should be served: always with mustard and never cut in two.
In his heartwarming short documentary, A Special Place, Montreal filmmaker and photographer Ezra Soiferman uses photos, poetry and music to give us a tasty glimpse into Wilensky’s and help us discover what makes this legendary place so iconic.
