Sound on for munching! 🔊
Our female alpacas ‘Chai’ (white) and ‘Pekoe’ (brown) are here munching on hay, one of the staple foods in their diet. 🌿 Their jaws help them to grind their food, but the main purpose of chewing is to mix saliva in saliva. Alpaca saliva contains bicarbonate and phosphate, which helps to buffer the fermentation of food in their ruminant stomachs.
