America had Jazz, Brazil had Samba. The Samba musical genre had a boom from the 1920s onward and soon became Brazil most well known cultural export, with names such as Carmen Miranda, Francisco Alves, Carlos Galhardo and many others bringing the Brazilian culture forward with their successes. This boom was noticed by the government, who used subsidies to singers and invested heavily into expanding radio throught Brazil to garantee the national integration of the country.
To listen to samba became a act of national pride, and the rhytm became a symbol of the brazilian golden age from the 1930s until the 1960s. It was the Soul of Brazil.
