Today we’ll look at how ‘All You Need Is Love’ was originally created in the studio and during the live broadcast.
The basic track was recorded at Olympic Sound Studios and begins with John on the harpsichord, accompanied by a simple drum part played by Ringo. Alongside this, George and Paul played the violin and double bass, creating a weird, minimalist arrangement. There are also clear indications that George Martin contributed a piano part, which served as a guide for the introduction.
Building on that foundation, additional overdubs were recorded, including percussion elements and another layer of piano. The documentation occasionally mentions a banjo, although it is not clearly audible in the final mix.
Finally, during the live broadcast, the track was expanded in real time. The orchestration, some vocals and the rhythm section (drums, bass and guitar) were performed live, blending with the pre-recorded material and giving the song its characteristic hybrid nature: part studio construction, part live performance.
Following the broadcast, a significant portion of the vocals (and orchestral elements) were re-recorded for the official releases, refining the performance for both the single and the version on the Magical Mystery Tour album.
