Recorded on 15 December 1966 at EMI Studios, this overdub added trumpets and cellos to the track, drastically changing its atmosphere. George Martin wrote and arranged the brass and string parts. They were recorded separately from the original rhythm track and then mixed using tape manipulation and varispeed.
The trumpets add a sharp, tense touch, while the cellos provide a dark, heavy foundation. Together they create the unsettling, dreamlike tension that defines the final section of the song. When combined with the reduced speed of the tape, these orchestral elements take on a supernatural character and blur the line between traditional instrumentation and sonic illusion; what was once a cello now sounds like a new orchestal instrument.
