London Stone is theorised to have represented the centre of authority and the starting point to measure distances in Roman Britain. This was known as a millerium, one of many across Roman Europe. According to legend, however, the value of the stone may be for more than tracking miles. Mythical King Brutus of Troy may have said: “So long as the Stone of Brutus is safe, so long shall London flourish”. So the capital better keep it safe!
