Video Description:
We need to go back at least five years to tell the full story of the Fluval M60. The Red Sea Reefer 170 was my first ever saltwater tank. I had scrimped and saved for months. My family was living in this dank little two bedroom apartment in Seattle, and I think I was working for the Hyatt in Bellevue at the time. I mean, I spent big on this tank. Two separate media reactors, Ecotech Radion XR15’s, Ecotech MP10, dosing pumps, reef saver rock, and I started stocking it with Euphyllia, back before the prices got crazy!
But then things started going south. Well, what was the problem? Me, definitely me. Too much tinkering. Too much filtering. I was (and am) so obsessed with cleanliness, that I tend to do way too much. I ran quintuple the recommended amount of GFO to make sure I had no phosphates. If a coral looked unhappy, I would immediately change the lights or the flow. A messy sandbed? Nope, I would constantly use a gravel vacuum and create huge dust storms.
GHA started to take over the tank. Why? No idea. Back then, I thought 0 nitrates and zero phosphates was the goal. As the GHA grew, my corals started getting upset and stopped growing.
Along the way I committed and untold number of mistakes. The pistol shrimp I bought to pair with my goby was the wrong type, my clowns took to the leather coral and loved it to death, my gsp garden just closed up and died, and acan fell during a vacation and half the colony died, gha absolutely took over my entire aquascape and I didn’t know what to do.
Work life was busy, home life as cramped, I was unhappy and needed to do something drastic. I broke down the reefer 170, sold it off, and bought the Fluval M60.
I figured the M60 was a good option. Smaller, no sump, just less maintenance overall and a chance to start over again. There was less opportunity to tinker, which was a good thing for me.
Family moved from Seattle to southern California, so had to break down the tank again.
