From my time visiting the Furka Oberalp Bahn (Dampfbahn Furka Bergstrecke) as a lampist and locomotive fireman;
Kosmos burners were patented by Wild & Wessel of Berlin in 1865 and subsequently used in the overwhelming majority of the beautiful and varied family of headlamps used on steam and electric locomotives in the heyday of all the European countries. These headlamps, when properly adjusted and in good order, can be used by the driver to see by; not just be seen by.
